How Much Does Speech Therapy Cost in NYC? A Transparent Look at Pricing & Value
Often, when parents call my clinic asking about private speech therapy costs in NYC, they may be initially surprised by the investment required and the current price of quality, personalized speech therapy.
I am often posed with this question…
Why does speech therapy for my child cost so much?
In this blog, I will provide a transparent look at the pricing and value for quality, innovative, creative, and effective private speech therapy in NYC today.
Quality speech therapy in NYC can cost anywhere from $200-to-$250 dollars per hour. This is for a tailored one-on-one treatment session with a nationally certified and New York State licensed speech-language pathologist.

Most private-pay speech therapy clinics in New York City are “out-of-network” providers. As we are trying to avoid reduced payment fees and long payment delays by third parties to the providers. That’s to us, “the providers.”
What exactly does it mean to be an out-of-network provider?
This means that your speech therapist in NYC will provide you with a fully coded invoice. The invoice is called a “Super Bill”. A Super Bill is for you to submit to your insurance carrier for out-of-network reimbursement (directly) back to your family. This is after you make an out-of-pocket payment to our clinic or your chosen provider.
In this case, it allows us to receive fair and timely payment for services that were provided. It also allows the child to begin receiving needed treatment in a timely, consistent, and effective manner.
This leads to happy therapists and a well-functioning clinic.

In turn, your child will receive quality speech therapy from a well-cared-for staff who prioritize your child’s continued growth and overall well-being.
Speech Therapy Cost & Billing: What to Expect Each Month
Each month, your speech therapist will spend time recording, documenting, and coding each of your child’s speech therapy sessions within this monthly Super Bill that is provided to you at the end of the month.
Each family is responsible for paying the full amount of that monthly invoice, which then can be submitted for out-of-network reimbursement to your health insurance company.
These super bills meet the health insurance company’s criteria and medical coding system for out-of-network reimbursement to the family.
Your speech therapist will always do their best to provide the most accurate clinical details in both their clinical notes and billing documents to try to ensure out-of-network reimbursement through these Super Bills.
We cannot guarantee full or partial out-of-network benefits, coverage, or reimbursement for every client, as each person’s health insurance plan is unique to them.
I always stress the importance of patient or parent responsibility.

It is the parent’s responsibility to call their insurance company and determine what their child’s specific health insurance coverage allows for within each calendar year.
What Your Insurance May Require for Reimbursement
In addition, many insurance companies require pre-authorizations or monthly invoice submissions to ensure appropriate reimbursement of funds back to the family.
As the parent, it is extremely important to determine what your specific insurance company requirements are to receive out-of-network coverage.
Therefore, I kindly encourage all families to fully explore their personal insurance options, as well as the documentation requirements and eligibility criteria, prior to beginning any therapeutic services.
Always share these documentation details in a timely manner with your treating therapist to receive the best reimbursement options as possible and ensure continuity of care for you and your child.
These document requirements may require your speech therapist to assess your child every few months to determine continued eligibility. Therefore, these details are important for the therapists to adhere to, and for the parent to be aware of.
The Lifelong Value of Working with a Speech Therapist in NYC
Private speech therapy in NYC is a valuable investment for your child’s lifelong growth and learning potential.
You may wonder, “Why is speech therapy so valuable?”
Let me explain to you in a few key points why working with a speech therapist in NYC is an extremely valuable investment for your child’s growth and your family’s overall well-being.
Overall, speech therapists hold a myriad of meaningful and valuable skills at their disposal and fingertips!
Speech therapists:
- Are highly trained licensed professionals with over seven years of academic and professional training in child speech, language, and feeding development.
- Complete undergraduate and graduate course-level work & hands-on internships in both medical and educational settings.
- Are trained to work with all ages, both children and adults.
- Exist as powerful agents for change in your child’s life.
- Serve as advocates for your child and family.
- Are cheerleaders, listeners, and support “anchors” for your child and your whole family.
- Behave as excellent detectives and creative thinkers.
- Are very effective problem-solvers.
- Proudly work as team-makers and team-players.
- Last but certainly not least, speech therapists are shining beacons of light and powerful guides who empower communication skills for your child.

When you invest in speech therapy in NYC, you are investing in your child’s future, potential growth, and opening limitless possibilities!
Exploring Low-Cost Alternatives to Private Speech Therapy in NYC
Finally, if private pay options are not accessible to you, there are a few “no-cost” options available within New York City through the New York City Early Intervention Program (EI). Additionally, there are options through the New York City Department of Education Program within the Related Services Department (RSAs), as well as the UnitedHealthcare Fund, which is available to those who have been denied therapeutic coverage by their health insurance company.
The New York State-based services are based on clinical eligibility criteria only. Your child must meet certain strict clinical eligibility criteria (in order to qualify) for no-cost services to the family.
This can be a lengthy process requiring: eligibility assessments, meetings, and reassessments.
In addition, there is an ongoing shortage of licensed speech-language pathologists working within these state programs.
It is not uncommon to wait for months for assessments, meetings, and then for qualified speech-language pathologists to treat your child.
Therefore, I always recommend to parents that, if they have the financial means, to invest in speech-language therapy for their child when they have concerns about their child’s speech and language development.
Strong Starts Lead to Strong Skills: The Power of Early Intervention
I always stress to parents and caregivers: Early intervention is key!
Early intervention results in the best outcomes. Countless studies have shown this, time and time again.
I recommend that parents begin the speech therapy assessment process the moment they notice their child experiencing communication challenges.
A child who starts therapy early and quickly will experience better outcomes and the best potential for learning and growth.
