Commonly Asked Questions About Speech Therapy at Chatty Child:

At Chatty Child, speech-language therapy is conducted by a national and state-licensed speech-language pathologist.

Speech-language pathologists are trained to work with all ages (children through adulthood) on communication, language, voice, oral motor, and/or feeding skills. Many speech therapists will specialize in either pediatrics or adults, following their training. So, it’s very important to find a speech therapist who specializes in pediatric patient care.

At Chatty Child, we treat a variety of common speech-language and feeding concerns. Common concerns that a speech-language pathologist can treat include: articulation concerns, speech and/or communication delays, auditory processing disorders, social communication supports, fluency (stuttering) concerns, as well as feeding difficulties and helping picky eaters. This is by no means an exhaustive list, however, these are common problems that we treat and can help find solutions to, in many cases, with effective treatment approaches.

At Chatty Child, each therapy session will look uniquely different for each child. We tailor each speech-language therapy session to your child’s individualized therapeutic needs and personal interests.

Chatty Child’s unique and innovative therapy sessions commonly include:

  • Greetings and introductions.
  • Warm-up exercises, sensory activities, dance, and gross motor play.
  • Immersive and targeted speech and/or language activity.
  • Supported creative arts pathways and activities to access communication skills.
  • Closing Exercises: clean up, goodbye song, closing meditation, songs.
  • Review of carry over exercises with the family and caregivers and/or school (if applicable).
  • We are happy to collaborate with a child’s caregivers and/or school with permission about monthly session goals, as well, on a monthly basis.  Please coordinate a 10-15 minute phone call or email with your therapist on a monthly basis, if you cannot attend the weekly sessions, so you can keep updated on their progress and goals for that month.

At Chatty Child, every child’s needs are different. It is generally recommended that a child attend speech-language therapy sessions at Chatty Child for a minimum of once per week for 60 minutes or twice per week for two 30-minute sessions  (depending on the amount of time they can tolerate the intervention, and based on the age of the child).

However, more or less weekly treatment sessions may be recommended based on your child’s individual needs, as each child’s treatment plan is based on each child’s unique learning profile and response to treatment. So, we may recommend starting with a few times a week, and then as progress is being made, we may recommend a reduction in services.  This is a fluid process, and recommendations will be made by your treating therapist, based on the child’s progress and treatment needs, and response to evidence-based techniques, which we use here at Chatty Child.

We also recommend discussing with your therapists any therapeutic changes you are considering, as we work as a team, together as partners!

We recommend that you start with a speech-language assessment by one of our qualified speech therapists to determine your child’s specific therapeutic needs at this time.

Chatty Child’s speech therapy sessions can vary from 30, 45 & and 60-minute time frames, which can be provided once, twice, or several times per week. We also offer intensive treatment options for those traveling to our New York City clinic from out of the area.

At Chatty Child, every child responds to speech & language treatment differently and at their own pace, and it also depends on the underlying cause of the speech-language delay or disorder to be addressed. There are things you can do to improve the success of your child’s speech-language treatment to ensure the best investment in your child’s treatment & progress in communication and learning skills.

  • Attend your scheduled weekly sessions regularly and consistently at Chatty Child.
  • Practice the carry-over exercises created by your therapist with your child at home to generalize the skills outside of the therapy room.
  • Communicate with your therapist. If you have a concern, let us know! If you would like us to collaborate with other caregivers or teachers, please tell us!
  • We are here to help and support you. We know -you know- your child best, tell us how we can assist you, most effectively! What would be most helpful for you right now?

At Chatty Child, you can expect to receive immediate support for you and your child. We first start with a speech-language or feeding assessment to determine your child’s current speech, language, and/or feeding goals.

Then, we will recommend a weekly treatment schedule. Taking into account your preferred days and times, along with when our therapists have openings. Your child’s therapist will work closely with you as we begin the treatment sessions.

You are welcome to attend each session, or wait in the waiting room. At the conclusion of each session, your therapist will accompany your child into the waiting room and discuss the activities completed, their progress, goals for next time, and activities to practice at home. Every child has their own unique journey to uncover. Let’s be partners together!

At Chatty Child, a child may receive speech therapy at any age, from infancy through adulthood. Early intervention is key! The earlier you start therapy, the better! When therapy is started early and consistently better and faster treatment outcomes are achieved. This is the importance of early intervention. Do not hesitate to reach out for support!

At Chatty Child, a licensed speech-language pathologist would assess your child and determine if speech therapy was warranted either medically, academically, socially, or both. This determination is made by using a variety of clinical and professional assessment methods, including: clinical observation, clinical assessment tools, parent, caregiver and teacher interviews, as well as a detailed case history intake and interview. This assessment process allows the therapists to gather important information about your child, their daily routine, their strengths, as well as their difficulties. This initial one-hour assessment is a crucial first step in developing a personalized and effective treatment plan for your child and your family’s needs.
