Will My Autistic Child Benefit From Pediatric Speech Therapy in NYC? A Parent’s Guide
I saw a news story this weekend that caught my attention. This story vividly illustrated to me how important speech therapy is. And how pediatric speech therapy in NYC can benefit an Autistic individual in numerous meaningful and pragmatic ways.
The local news story I watched described in detail how a young Autistic child had walked out of a restaurant while dining with his family. And in the blink of an eye, he found the nearest subway station. He climbed aboard for a fun ride along the New York City Subway System. He knew the map by heart and greatly enjoyed riding and learning about trains.
Luckily, a good samaritan noticed the child riding the subway alone. They notified nearby police officers, who were then able to intervene and reunite the child with his family.
Thankfully, this particular story does have a happy ending.
However, this type of story is far too common and can be avoided with the right support. This includes pediatric speech and language therapy in NYC.

Are you wondering how a speech-language pathologist can help your child and family avoid a distressing situation? Similar to the one described above?
A speech-language pathologist can help ensure improved safety for your child.
We can also provide them with communication and visual aids. These facilitate improved ability to retain and communicate vital information to trusted adults.
Keeping Kids Safe Through Pediatric Speech Therapy in NYC
For example, I may work with a child to improve their ability to communicate their name, age, address, and phone number to a police officer or neighborhood shopkeeper.
We may even practice this a few times in the therapy room and then outside the therapy room (in the real world). This is so that a child may learn to generalize these important skills.
In my 20-plus years as a practicing speech-language pathologist, the pertinent information I have taught my students has saved more than one of my “lost patients”.

During these crucial moments, I am proud to report that they were able to find help. And provide the important information we had practiced, and then get home quickly and safely.
When working with a non-verbal child, I ensure that the child has access to augmentative and alternative communication means.
Exploring AAC Tools with Speech & Language Therapy
Examples of such alternative communication means would be picture symbols, the use of an AAC board, or even a portal keychain with visual symbols and/or written information. I will also suggest a wearable bracelet with identifying information (if needed).
These are some of the many ways that pediatric speech therapy in NYC can help Autistic individuals live full and meaningful lives. All while providing support to ensure one’s safety and learning.

Speech-language therapy can create an environment rooted in safe and exploratory learning. This results in increased independence for all ages.
